3 Reasons You Can Trust Scripture
Many people today question the reliability of Scripture. Maybe you’ve thought it yourself or heard it from others: “The Bible seems like a great book, but was it really inspired by God? Didn’t people write it? Couldn’t they have made mistakes?”
These are honest questions. In a world where truth feels increasingly subjective, it’s not uncommon to wrestle with doubts about the foundation of our faith. But when you take a closer look, the evidence supporting the trustworthiness of the Bible is overwhelming.
Let’s walk through a few reasons why we can be confident that Scripture is not only historically accurate, but divinely inspired.
One Story, 40 Authors, 1500 Years
The Bible was written by more than 40 different authors over a span of approximately 1500 years. These writers lived in different parts of the world, spoke different languages, and came from diverse backgrounds. Some were kings. Others were prophets, poets, or fishermen.
And yet, despite these differences, the Bible tells one unified story; the redemption of the world through God’s love.
That kind of coherence over centuries is unheard of. No other literary or historical work even comes close to achieving such a consistent message across that much time and by that many hands. It points to something greater than human effort. It points to divine authorship.
24,000 Manuscripts and Unmatched Accuracy
To understand just how reliable the Bible is, consider this: there are over 24,000 ancient manuscripts that contain sections of Scripture. These documents were uncovered in different parts of the world, yet they consistently match and confirm each other.
They were written at different times, sometimes hundreds of years apart, but when compared, they align like pieces of a puzzle.
To put that into perspective, the second most well-preserved historical text is The Iliad by Homer, which has 650 surviving manuscripts. That’s impressive in itself, but it’s still only a fraction of what exists for the Bible.
Even so, few people question the origin or accuracy of The Iliad. Scholars accept it for what it claims to be. So why is the Bible, which surpasses it by thousands of manuscripts, so frequently doubted? The answer lies not in the evidence, but in the weight of what it claims: that it is the very Word of God.
Unparalleled Care in Transmission
Some people assume the Bible lost its accuracy over time due to the way it was copied from generation to generation. But nothing could be further from the truth.
Ancient scribes followed incredibly strict guidelines when copying Scripture. These weren’t casual efforts. There were ceremonial protocols for everything: from the clothes they wore, to the ink formulas they used, to the material on which they wrote—typically parchment made only from clean animals.
They never copied from memory or dictated from someone else. Everything was transcribed from existing manuscripts. And if a single letter was misplaced or miscounted, the entire parchment was thrown out and the process started over.
It was checked. And rechecked. Again and again.
When the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered, scholars found manuscripts that were more than 1000 years older than existing copies. Yet the level of accuracy between the ancient scrolls and the newer manuscripts was astonishing. That kind of precision over centuries of hand-copying speaks volumes.
Scripture Is Steady When Life Is Shaken
So why does all this matter? Because the Bible isn’t just a historical document. It is dead reckoning for the life of a disciple of Jesus.
When the ground beneath us shakes, emotionally, physically, spiritually, we need something immovable to stand on. And that’s what Scripture is.
Maybe you’ve experienced trauma growing up. Maybe you had a difficult relationship with a parent, or your home life was filled with pain. That kind of brokenness will shake you. And it should.
But even in the middle of that, there is a place where healing can be found. There is a source of hope and comfort.
It is the Word of God.
Maybe you’ve faced abuse that distorted the way you see yourself. Maybe your life has been turned upside down by a medical diagnosis or financial crisis. Maybe someone twisted your words, rejected you, or told you that you don’t belong.
People fail. Circumstances crumble. But Scripture remains. The Bible is tested, tried, and true. It’s not subject to cultural trends or human error. It is the enduring, reliable, unchanging Word of a loving Father who speaks directly to you.
The Unchanging Voice of God
The reason we engage Scripture as disciples of Jesus Christ is because we need something unshakable. We need a truth that doesn’t shift with the winds of culture or emotion.
That’s the beauty of God’s Word. It is historically accurate. It is spiritually authoritative. And more than anything, it is personal.
These are not just ancient words. They are the very breath of God, given so that we would know who He is and who we are in Him. When everything else changes, the Word of God remains.
It is faithful.
It is true.
It is enough.
