What Happens When You Say Yes to God

All of us, no matter our background, are born into the same story: one shaped by sin. It’s not a topic we love talking about, but it’s a reality we can’t ignore. Scripture is clear—our natural state is to be in opposition to God. It’s what the Bible calls our “sin nature.” And because of that, we’re not naturally aligned with God’s plan for our lives.

But here's the truth: God doesn't leave us in that condition. Just like Paul on the road to Damascus, we are given moments of confrontation—moments when God breaks through the noise and says, “Why are you resisting Me?” These aren't just moments of revelation, but also of invitation.

God’s revelation is always an invitation to adjust our lives to Him. That phrase might sound simple, but it's deeply challenging. Adjustment, in the biblical sense, isn't just about tweaking a few habits or making small lifestyle changes. It means obedience. It means re-aligning our values, schedules, relationships, finances, and priorities with what God is calling us to do.

When Saul encountered the light from heaven and heard Jesus' voice, his life didn't just shift—it was upended. From persecutor to preacher, Paul’s transformation is a vivid picture of what can happen when we surrender to God’s plan. And this isn't just a story for one man—it’s an invitation for all of us.

Adjusting Isn’t Easy, But It’s Right

We make room in our lives for so many things: hobbies, careers, vacations, even our children’s busy schedules. But when it comes to God asking us to make room for Him, we hesitate. Why? Because following Jesus will cost us something. It may cost us comfort, security, or even our own carefully constructed identities.

But here's a line worth repeating: Obedience is costly, but not obeying is more costly.

Jesus never promised that following Him would be easy. But He did promise it would be worth it. Aligning our lives with His plan brings a peace and purpose the world simply can’t offer.

What Keeps Us from Saying Yes?

Some of us are like Paul, holding onto something—maybe fear, maybe pride—that keeps us from fully surrendering. Others feel the Holy Spirit tugging on their hearts, inviting them into relationship with Jesus, but they grip tightly to control, uncertain of what comes next.

If you’re at that crossroads, think about this: what’s keeping you from the good that God has for you?

Often, when people say they don’t hear from God, the real issue isn’t that He’s not speaking. It’s that they haven’t aligned their lives to a place where they’re ready to listen. We want to hear God’s voice, but we ignore the lifestyle He calls us to live in order to hear Him clearly.

God’s plan isn’t something we fit into our already-full schedules. It becomes the foundation upon which everything else is built.

Alignment Looks Like Obedience

When God calls, He doesn't adjust to us. We adjust to Him.

That means evaluating every area of our lives:

  1. Family – Are we leading our homes in a way that points to Jesus?

  2. Time – Does our schedule reflect God’s priorities?

  3. Finances – Are we being generous and faithful with what He’s given us?

  4. Relationships – Are we loving others the way Jesus commands us to?

  5. Faith – Are we actually trusting Him, or just going through the motions?

You might be thinking, “That sounds hard.” And it is. But it’s also the path to freedom. When we release what we’re holding onto—fear, shame, control—we open ourselves up to receive what only God can give: purpose, peace, and direction.

The Crossroads Moment

Maybe God has met you in a moment recently. Maybe today is that moment. He’s been speaking to you, not with condemnation, but with love and clarity. He’s saying, “You don’t have to carry the burden anymore. I’ve made a way through my Son Jesus. Will you trust me?”

Some of you are clinging to the pew or chair in front of you each week, feeling the nudge to respond, but unsure how. You’ve heard the gospel—Jesus died for your sins, rose from the grave, and now offers you new life through faith. But you’re stuck in the decision.

What happens next matters. What you choose next says everything about what you believe to be true about God.

Will you say yes?
